Ton Coppoolse
Geboren in 1960 als Anthonie Pieter Coppoolse te Santiago de Chile. Gewoon uit Nederlandse ouders die in totaal 6 jaar in Chili hebben gewoond, zelf in het voormalig Nederland Indië zijn opgegroeid en met mij ook nog eens twee jaar in Madrid hebben gewoond. Binnen Nederland hebben we ook in diverse steden gewoond, dus de vraag "waar kom je vandaan?" vind ik altijd moeilijk te beantwoorden.
De familienaam COPPOOLSE vindt zijn oorsprong op het (voormalige) eiland Walcheren in de provincie Zeeland. Hollandser kan de naam zowat niet zijn, zodat het nogal vreemd is dat veel Nederlanders denken dat het Pools is of zoiets.
Eerste stamvader Cop Poolse trouwt rond 1600 met Nele Pieters. We nemen aan dat de voornaam Cop een afkorting is van Ja cob . De familienaam Poolse is waarschijnlijk "Paul's zoon", waarbij Paul als POOL op z'n Nederlands werd geschreven en SE "zoon van" betekent op Walcheren.
Aangezien de stad Veere in 1541 de rechten verkreeg voor het verhandelen van Schotse wol naar de rest van Europa, vestigden vele Schotse families en hun personeel zich toen in en rond Veere. Cop's vader Paul was waarschijnlijk dan ook een Schotse man, die (hopelijk vrijwillig) een Zeeuwse schone boerendochter heeft bezwangerd, waar dus (Ja)Cop Poolse (Paul's zoon) uit geboren werd.

Born in 1960 as Anthonie (hense the abbreviation To N !!!) Pieter Coppoolse in Santiago de Chile from Dutch parents. We have lived in several places in the Netherlands and for 1,5 years in Madrid. So the question "where are you from?" is not easily answered.
The family name COPPOOLSE originates from the former island of Walcheren in the province of Zeeland in the South-West of the Netherlands. It's kind of rare in the perception of most Dutch people, that one hardly recognises it as being Dutch.
We assume that the family name is a fusion of Ja(COP) and Paul's son (POOLSE). The first mentioning in the archives was of this Cop Poolse marrying around 1600. His father Paul was most likely an Scottish man, since the town Veere was granted the Scottish Stock on wool in 1541, and many Scottish families including their staff moved to Veere during the 16th century. The grandson of Cop was named Jacob Poolse and under French influences people were forced to register family names, and he registered his children with the family name Coppoolse , apparently honouring this grandfather Cop Poolse.
